The Higher Education Resource Center merges educational, spiritual, and community-based resources in urban communities throughout Massachusetts. HERC bridges higher education access for youth achievement.
OUR GOALS
To motivate, orient, prepare, and support undeserved youth to complete high school and to pursue and complete post-secondary education.
To replicate and extend partnerships with churches, community organizations, and educational institutions to increase academic achievement and improve college access for undeserved youth.
WHO DO WE SERVE?
Urban youth, particularly African -American, Haitian-American, and Latino youth
Grades 6 - 12
First generation, low to moderate-income
Most students served by HERC sites are not members of the host church, and in fact, more then half re not affiliated with any church at all.
WHAT MAKES HERC DISTINCTIVE?
Utilizes indigenous networks in the community to provide services and reach people
Demonstrates value for successful collaborations
Inspires and empowers youth not to "flee" the city, but return to be the next generation of leaders in the city.
